The month of February in Brazil is synonymous with parties. For this is carnival time, the party in witch the Brazilians, with masks and fancy-dress, truly reveals the essence of his character; happy, creative, musical and irreverent. Officially the Brazilian Carnival starts on a Sunday and finishes on a Tuesday, almost always in February. (The dates of the celebration vary according to the Roman-Catholic-Apostolic calendar, and takes place forty days before Easter). During these three days the country joins the revelry from north to south, from east to west, although in some places the tradition is stronger. The official festivities go on for more than a week, not counting the so-called "previas", which take place practically the whole summer. And despite always having the same essence, the Carnival celebrations take on their own special characteristics in each part of the country. T2B 016 Even those who have never seen it are in no doubt; the parade of the Samba Schools - the centerpiece of the Rio Carnival- is the greatest show on earth. The people of Salvador also pack the streets to celebrate Carnival. In the capital of Bahia, the music comes from the "Trio Eletricos" (mobile sound systems), enormous trucks converted into stages, blaring out the contagious "axe-music" at a phenomenal volume. These are typically "baiana" inventions which have become popular all over Brazil, specially among young people. Indeed, crowds of them throng the streets of Salvador during Carnival, singing and dancing behind the trucks. Each sound system attracts its own block of revelers, who usually dress in the same costume and stick together as they progress through the heaving crowds.

The Carnival in Pernambuco is one of the most high-spirited and certainly the most democratic in the country. This is a street party for all ages; children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens show off their costumes in the winding streets of Olinda and the narrow lanes of Old-Recife. The "frevo", the rhythm that rocks the party, has versions to suit all tastes. Orchestras of strings and brass play the slower, more rhythmic songs, normally parading in the morning for the benefit of the children and the older participants. As the day goes on, the rhythm accelerates, adding more and more percussion and blending into "maracatu", another characteristics musical expression of the Pernambucano Carnival.
